Once in Vermont
Published in Paperback by Gnomon Press (01 October, 1999)
Author: Bob Arnold
Average review score:

A sensitive book
I like sensitive poetry books. I like when a poet writes about his own personal experiences, and not some smart lines that tell nothing. This is exactly what I found with this book. It's a small books about the small things in life and I could really identify with it.

Other Women

Author: Lisa Alther
Average review score:

I couldn't put it down
One of the best books I have read in a while. I just couldn't put it down until I had finished it, and then I was sad that it was over. This book has everything: Humor, compassion, wisdom, insight, and great characters. It makes you think deeply about your own life and your relationships. The slow transformation of the main character Caroline is fascinating as she goes through therapy and takes a critical look at herself and her past. I have bought copies for all my friends to read and they all liked it just as much. If you tend to get depressed during the winter months, read this book as it may not only cheer you up but may also give you a fresh new perspective on your life.

Out: The Vermont Secession Book
Published in Paperback by New England Press (May, 1989)
Authors: Frank Bryan, Bill Mares, and Jeff Danziger
Average review score:

Hilarious
Mares and Bryan present a hilarious book, which sets up the premise of the small rural state of Vermont taking on the United States government by seceding from the Union. Great insights and extremely funny humor is laden throughout the book. A must read for any true Vermonter. Beware "flatlanders".

Pane e Salute: Food and Love in Italy and Vermont
Published in Hardcover by Invisible Cities Press (November, 2002)
Authors: Deirdre Heekin and Caleb Barber
Average review score:

Italy--and fine Italian cuisine--within reach
New Englanders are fortunate enough to be within a reasonable driving distance to Woodstock, an idyllic Victorian town nestled in the Rutland region of eastern Vermont--perhaps one of the last places one might look for exquisite, authentic Italian cuisine served in an atmosphere that could just as easily be in Siena or Florence as Vermont. For everyone else, there is--thankfully--this book. While Heekin and Barber are not themselves Italian, their long love affair with Italy, its culture and its people have inspired them to the fine culinary heights that come from immersing oneself in the fundamental laws of simple, full-bodied living. They KNOW Italy. Heekin's exquisite, finely crafted prose introduces each section of the book, which is organized by season, and Barber's brilliant recipes (and his flair for imparting them in a way that is truly inspirational) make this lovely volume a must-have in ANY cook's kitchen, especially if you love Italy, real Italian food and what can only be called "authentic living." Live and cook by their recipes, and you'll transform your kitchen and home into a warm, cozy, sun-filled haven for you, your friends and family.

Peasant of West Brattleboro

Author: David Chase
Average review score:

Read it! You'll love him.
After reading this collection of classic Vermont humor and laughing 'til it hurt, I pursued the author and married him! We're both still laughing.

Read the book - the laughing part will work. The marriage part's been taken care of, however.

Pipers at the Gates of Dawn: A Triptych (Hardscrabble Books)
Published in Paperback by University Press of New England (August, 1900)
Author: Lynn Stegner
Average review score:

'Pipers' is a Delight! 5 Stars!
Stegner's 'Pipers at the Gates of Dawn' was a joy! I was immediatly hooked by the first of the 3 stories. Such a hauntingly well-written and provocative set of stories should be shared with anyone who enjoys reading about the complexity of human relationships and life decisions - commitments, passions, and community.

The great reviews of 'Pipers' published just following this new release express my experience perfectly.

From Booklist:

Stegner/PIPERS AT THE GATES OF DAWN

"This is beautiful writing: the kind that articulates precise emotional complexity in sensuous terms . . . Family secrets, family lovingness, lost chances, and conscience followed and overridden dominate these stories, along with a bittersweet evocation of life in a town where residents and summer folk go back generations." From Library Journal

"Whether she is writing about a teenager who runs the family farm, a middle-aged couple, or a feisty older man, Stegner offers knowledge of her characters that is flawless. . . In concise and elegant prose, the author conveys an exquisite sense of place, giving readers a captivating you-are-there feeling. A major accomplishment; recommended for all public and academic libraries."

The Price of Land in Shelby: A Novel (Hardscrabble Books)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of New England (October, 1996)
Author: Laurie Alberts
Average review score:

Thoroughly enjoyable.
After just returning from a 2 week vacation in New England, I thoroughly enjoyed this portrait of country life. After seeing postcard views of the New England countryside & romanticizing rural life, it was engrossing to read about real people with real problems that arise no matter where one lives. The portrayal of all the love, ugliness, devotion, jealousy that comprises a family was remarkable. The characters were believable and likeable despite their flaws. In addition to the inspiration, the book was a great read!

Real Vermonters Don't Milk Goats
Published in Paperback by New England Press (October, 1983)
Authors: Frank Bryan, Bill Mares, and Howard Johnson
Average review score:

Humorus look at how Vermonters see the world and themselves
In America, most people live an urban or suburben life. Then you have Vermonter's, who tend to view the world from a rural perspective. This book is a funny way for outsiders to understand Vermonter's while the Vermonter's poke fun at themselves. As an expatriot Vermonter I can recommend this book as fun reading.
